How It Started
We started out in a garage in West Dayton with just three pieces of machinery:
How It's Going
We’ve expanded to 1000 sq. ft. that includes over 15 pieces of equipment with future plans to expand to an even bigger space, complete with studios/office space for rent, and larger workshops and equipment.
The Full Story
The Westside Makerspace was founded in 2019 by a group of University of Dayton grads, engineers and co-founders Edwin Dirksen, Cherrelle Gardner, Claude Nicol and Alvin Wilkerson. The grassroots Makerspace was first built in the garage of one of the founders, as they pulled together their tools; including things like screwdrivers, a table saw, and laser engraver they purchased on eBay. Inspired by the success of Gem City Market, and recognizing the gaps in access and opportunity in Dayton, the founding members committed to highlighting the talents, assets, artisans and creative entrepreneurs in West Dayton.
Our Purpose
To provide collaborative, community space(s) with access to tools, equipment, and instruction for members to work together while developing their craft. We aim to empower the community by rooting power, control, and profit locally.
Why the WestSide?
West Dayton is an area steeped in history and entrepreneurship.
From the Wright Brothers to Paul Lawrence Dunbar, West Dayton has been home to art and innovation for generations. It is in that spirit of art and innovation that we wanted to explore what it would look like for us to reinvest in the area where we grew up.
We want to lead the way for Black entrepreneurs and creators in the area. Our belief is that if we can create a space that reinvests in the people that grew up in similar situations that we can encourage people to stay here, return here, and invest in a place that looks like us.
